How to piss off your customer base via @Nikon

[UPDATE] – 24+ hours later, 3,000+ comments… how has this not been taken down yet?!

Check out Nikon’s Facebook post 2 hours ago. It will probably be taken down by the time you click this link: https://www.facebook.com/nikon/posts/10150316773294620

It states:

A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Which is your favorite and what types of situations do you use it for?

There are so many things wrong with that facebook post:

1. Its contrary to the core beliefs of most if not all amateur/professional photographers. Good equipment gets you only so far, if you gave Ansel Adams an iPhone camera his shots would still be awesome. One comment below states: “nikon’s statement is one of the biggest disservices one can make to photographers who put effort into each and every image they make. Its never been about the equipment” This post was clearly not written by a photographer

2. Who’s monitoring this Facebook page?! There are 958 comments in the past 2 hours, and by my eyeball judgement 3/4 of the comments are super negative.

3. Its just stupid. “Do any of our facebook fans uses any of the NIKKOR Lenses?” – come on, thats like saying do any fans of the Ford facebook page drive a Ford?! Do any fans of the Coke facebook page drink Coke? – A better approach for brands would be to actually provide useful information for their customers/fans, instead of something lame like, do you like our products?!
